Speak Up: I can't hear you.

You know, I mentioned confrontation in the last entry.  Today, I bundled up. Put on long underwear. A neck wrap.  Gloves. I hopped on my bike and was doing surprisingly well considering the temperature.  Biking in the cold wasn't as bad as I thought. It was the wind that was the major challenge.

I also confronted a conversation that needed to be had. I faced it and well, I feel like progress was made.  I need to practice this more often. I think we all feel better and have a better understanding when we let go of fear and live in our truth. It's definitely something that requires practice.

So overall, it was a good day and here are the highlights.
  1. Making the phone call to confront one of the "glitches" and talking things through was great.
  2. Talked to my dad.  This was one of the best conversations. Actually, they have all been rather good since we've had "the open and honest" conversation. In the conversation last night, I guess I was on a roll with talking about confronting issues.  We talked about my cousin and some remarks that were made regarding Hurricane Sandy.  I told my dad that the older I get, the less willing I am to be a bystander.  When things are important, it's time to put aside the anxiety and fear of being judged. That's what's wrong with plenty of people as it is!  Speak your truth.  Even if someone doesn't agree with your truth, it's fine because it's not theirs anyhow!
  3. I loved that I biked 17 miles today as opposed to the 10 miles I originally thought I'd only do.  WOO! HOO!  That was over 1700 calories burned.
  4. One of my favorite scenes in a movie:  Neo Meets the Oracle for the Second Time. Just when we thought we made a choice, did we really? hmmm  Ponder. hahaha
  5. I love Daylight Savings Time.  I love it for different reasons now.  Because I can sleep longer.  Not that I even sleep a lot.  When I was in college I loved it because the bars would all stay open one extra hour.  These days I could totally care less about that.

A Glitch

I often call it a glitch in "The Matrix".  Ever since the movie of the same name, I think in terms of this.  When I enter into new friendships or relationships or just with friends, family or co-workers, there is sometimes a glitch.  Something that tells me, "You know, something just isn't the same." Others call it intuition.  I have a student that recently said that I can always sense when something isn't right with her.  Tonight, actually a few nights ago, I sensed that with someone else.

My intuitiveness used to drive me crazy.  Actually, if I said it still didn't do that on some level, I'd be lying. Whatever the outcome may be, I know there's something to be said for paying attention to that 6th sense.

It is what it is and while I'm not one to be confrontational, I've become more comfortable with it over the years but not so comfy that it's an easy area for me to delve into.  With that said, I do understand that confrontation tends to bring relief to both parties and puts you back into a shared reality.  Yep.... I'm being very cerebral right tonight. HAHAHA

Ack!  Anyhow, here's what I loved about today - Friday

  1. That Thai Chop Salad from Panera Bread = DELICIOUS. I love that lunch was provided at work today!
  2. Meeting with my students is always a pleasure.  I love seeing their eyes open with excitement of a plan.
  3. I love that  if you have your own coffee mug you can get a coffee for $1.25 on campus!  That's amazing and so was that Pumpkin Spice Brule'!
  4. Singing karaoke tonight a few times and being applauded is very night.  Whether I sang well or not... trust me.. I sing pretty decently.. hahahaha
  5.  Sleeping in this morning will feel amazing!

    Untitled: Version 1

Before this sleeping pill settles into my system and I turn in for the night, I needed to write this entry.  This is my 200th entry by the way.  That's pretty good. I started this blog about a year ago.  So, I've only missed about 156 days of blogging. hahaha

Lately, I've been in a mood.  I can't even really explain it. It's not been a bad mood - just moody, I guess. Maybe aggressive? Maybe I'm just out of my normal routine and it's messing with me.  Who knows.  Add to that, trying to manage a new relationship - which I haven't had in ages.  At any rate, I need to work on that.

This blog is all about daily self-reflection. With hopes to be a better human being.

    1. Today was the start of Movember.  One of my friends joined the team today and we are both starting off with freshly shaved faces to raise awareness for prostate cancer.  Glad to have him aboard!
    2. My friend wanted to go to the National Tree Lighting Ceremony at the White House and asked me to put in a request for the lottery for tickets.  She didn't get tickets but I did! I told her she has a ticket and she's super excited. I also invited Greg to the event. It should be a lot of fun and to top it all off, we have seats!  No standing room only for us!
    3. I saw a photo on Facebook that showed the humanity in others through the toughest of times.  It was heart warming to see and so I want to share it on this entry.
    4. The movie, "Flight", starring Denzel Washington was really good.  Not what I expected at all and that made it a very well made movie with a few lessons throughout the story.
    5. Having a chat with my friend, Adam, online brought up new ideas on how to improve my Etsy and t-shirt shops.  It was a very good exchange of ideas and I appreciate his honesty.

    I Am...

There is something to be said for being comfortable with who you are as a person.  Today I commented on something a cousin posted as their Facebook status.  It annoyed me a bit. They suggested that the reason (Hurricane) Superstorm Sandy hit where it did is because many of those states either allow for same-sex marriage or will be voting for same-sex marriage and God was not pleased with that. That, to me, sounded like the most ignorant thing I've ever heard!  At the time I could only respond with, "Really? Oh, ok O_o"   Later a reply was posted saying they didn't mean to offend anyone and that it was just their opinion.  That's fine and good but I feel the need to share my opinion and posted this in response.

"I'm not offended, just surprised to see you think that way.  There are a lot more things I can think of as unpleasing to God than people wanting to get married legally like everyone else. There are 11 countries who recognize same-sex marriages and they weren't harmed.  Whole countries and not just states. Regardless of people getting married or not - there has been and always will be gay relationships. Do we blame all catastrophic weather and natural disasters on those relationships or just accept that bad weather happens because that's what weather does?  There are a lot of people affected (from newborns to adults) by the storm that could care less whether people have the right to marry or not and haven't even participated in any lobbying of such legislation.  I think the real lesson from this storm (or from God if you believe) is to recognize our own humanity and share the same care and love for those we know and who are strangers to us; regardless of who they are or whom they want to legally marry. The Golden Rule somehow comes to mind."
The "Dennis" a year ago would have just overlooked the comment and not said anything.   But I have this whole social justice thing living in me. I'm beginning to live in the idea of, "If not me, then who will speak up?"  PLUS, that comment was directed at the community I identify with.  I was not about to just let someone say some ridiculousness and wrap it up in a Bible Blanket. I am... no longer a bystander. There is a great video of Julian Bond, speaking on behalf of civil rights.  I'll place the video at the bottom of this post.

At any rate - moving on.  Here's my list of the 5 things I loved about today.
    1. To have friends and family that were so concerned about my well-being.  While I hated hearing the phone buzz this morning - I'm grateful that it did.  People care! Thank you!
    2. I love naps when it's cold outside (and inside cause I keep the temp low).
    3. Eggo Waffles Pumpkin Spice flavor. MMm, Mmm, good.
    4. I am lovin' the new shirt designs I created today.  Especially the "I Am..." shirts.
    5. The Presidential election and other voting will take place in one week.  Actually, this time next Tuesday, we will know who our next President is.  We will know if another state in the union will allow for same-sex marriage. We will know which side the government will lean in terms of political party.  One thing I loved about today is reading the information about the Electoral College and how the President is managing the disaster of (Hurricane) Superstorm Sandy.

The Day that Hurricane Sandy Paid a Visit

Hurricane Sandy got PLENTY of coverage today on the local new channels.  While it wasn't much to report in terms of damage where I live - I hope I can say the same for people I know in affected areas when I wake up in the morning.

I've said this before on this blog and I'll say it again.  It is harder to come up with a list when you don't leave the house - but I have a list!  I HAVE A LIST!
    1. It's nice to have family and friends that care enough to check on my well being during the storm.  There are still a few hours left to be totally in the clear but I never once saw a light flicker nor lost my internet or TV.  If you didn't know, I don't have cable - so I watch everything via an outdoor antenna.  That antenna never budged.
    2. We were notified of having Tuesday off from work.  Campus is CLOSED! WOO HOO!
    3. My friend Myra, sent me a text to ask me if I still wanted a headlamp for when I go biking.  I said I did.  She bought one for me and her. How amazingly nice was that?
    4. Tonight I made my first Hot Tottie.  They are tasty!  I think I may make more of these in the winter months.
    5. I lit my fireplace for the first time in over a year.  I love having a wood burning fireplace. I need to use it more.

    Hurricane Sandy - Don't be a Bitch!

PAH-TY!  That's what HE said.  hahaha  We woke up in Nic and Meg's house this morning and had no hangover.  I just want to celebrate that fact right now.  I also want to celebrate the fact that I am shaking this cold.  The cough is producing "results" and I can breathe out of my nose.  YAY!

With this hurricane on the way, I hope it passes through and leaves very little evidence that says, requires a thank you note from "Sandy".
    1. I love that I am meeting so many people through my dating such a gregarious person.
    2. Oh, and as a #2 to the list. I'm glad he's as thoughtful and dependable as he is.
    3. Talking to my dad today, he told me some stories from when he was younger. I always enjoy hearing these stories because they always have some sort of historical relevance to them.  I said that he needs to start writing those things down and I would type them up. I think it would make for good reading material for a memoir.
    4. Getting the confirmation that campus is closed tomorrow due to Hurricane Sandy is AWESOME!  What might not be so awesome is gettin' hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. O_o
    5. We're making progress on the online magazine work.  The bro and I have developed the sections for the first issue.
*what's really funny is that I found this clip art and it has his name on it! bwahahaha!

    S'mores P'lease!

Today was the day that got me to see my home in a completely new way.  CLEAN!  Yep, that's right.  I'm trying to keep my home clean and organized.  Two things my home has rarely been. Well, today is a NEW DAY!

Here's some freakin' awesome things about today.

    1. My home is clean.
    2. My cold is getting better.  Illness be gone!
    3. I went to a Halloween Party with GD. I had a great time and met some great people.
    4. The sangria that Nic made was THE BOMB DIGGITY!
    5. Making S'mores over the fire pit and it making a big, delicious mess.

The 5 Things I Loved About Today - Being Sick Ain't One of Them...

Today I woke up feeling less than stellar.  I've caught a cold.  How could I catch a cold?  I've been healthy as can be.  I'm in the best shape of my life.  And I have been going to the gym.  AhhhHhh.... that's probably it.  Going to the gym on campus.  Where nasty, unclean machine usage occurs.  Makes since since I started using the gym I get sick a after a few days of exposure.  I won't let that hold me back though.

Here's the things that I loved about today.

    1. Going to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore on the way back from running an errand. I wasn't planning on buying anything but I did. A towel rack, a toilet paper holder and two cans of wood stain. All for $6!
    2. I went to my favorite Chinese Restaurant and got the General Tsos Chicken.  Even their lunch special was a huge serving! MmmmMmm... I ended up with lunch AND dinner.
    3. Got a surprise phone call or three.  Very nice. Not that it's a requirement. But it's nice.
    4. I loved that the students I work with are making things happen even while I'm out sick.
    5. I LOVE this video:

It's All in How You Look at It.

    Which cup do you choose?
Today is one of those days where I really have to think about what cool things have happened today that I loved. Sometimes you have to reach into the "grateful bag". To be grateful for things that maintain your life and livlihood is a little bit easier. You can resolve to be thankful for living another day. You can be grateful that you were able to eat today. You can be grateful to have a roof over your head. But to think about the things you loved about the day is way more challenging than rattling off what I think of as a "given". You have to be mindful about it throughout the entire day.  It can be the way the sun was shining on the autumn leaves or having someone show you appreciation. Acknowledging those moments is what makes it special.

In thinking about what those moments or things were for the day, this is what I came up with.

    1. I loved that I was able to share stories about Las Vegas with students today.  It was fun to see their reactions.
    2. Roasted Pine Nut Humus by Sabra. That stuff is DELICIOUS!
    3. I bowled a 170 game tonight.  That's pretty awesome!
    4.  I got the new Taylor Swift CD, "Red" and I have to say that it's pretty good. I think she gets better with each album and less and less country.  Not that there's anything wrong with country music. hahaha  It's like she's taking lessons from the Shania Twain playbook.  Speaking of Shania - Where is the new music???
    5. You have to give it to 7-Eleven.  Their Pumpkin Spice Latte tastes pretty damn good and is only $1.74 compared to the $4+ you'd pay at Starbucks.  Thank Heaven for 7-Eleven! Oh.. and since it's election season, I ALWAYS grab the blue cup!

    Chipotle Soothes the Soul

I don't care how I feel, I can always be in the mood for Chipotle.  I mean, do they put addictive drugs in their food or something?  Wait.  Don't answer that because I really don't want to know.  I will just say that it is REALLY tasty.

The office was full of tension today.  It was a bit surreal but we all seemed to survive.  We always find a way - which is one of the things I loved about today.

    1. The thing about life is that nothing is really ever as important or immediate as it seems. I love it when I or someone I know realizes that even after a long day of being angry, upset, frustrated, sad, etc.
    2. Today's weather was utterly amazing for it to be the end of October.  It was 82 degrees today!
    3. Catching Lady Sings the Blues on TV was a nice treat. There really wasn't anything else on TV that I wanted to watch. Too bad Billie Holiday was on "that stuff".
    4. I was rummaging through my desk drawer and came across a packet of Earl Gray tea.  I LOVE Earl Gray tea and needed that tea today for this stuffiness I'm having with my sinus.
    5. I put on a little Shirley Bassey at work.  I just love her voice!  The Propellerhead's remixes of her songs are amazing.

    Battleships!

I have been a political junkie for the last 10 years.  I don't miss a Presidential Debate.  Tonight's debate didn't change my opinion (because I am a firm Democrat) but it solidified my confidence in our POTUS.

Today was a good day, aside from getting sick.  Here's how it all went down.

    1. I got a lot done at work as far as getting organized.  I'm on a organizational journey and trying to turn over a new leaf.
    2. To stick with a plan that you've set feels awesome.  I said I was going to run and I did.  Run/Walk but I did it and completed 1.85 miles.
    3. Dinner was made for me. Awwww.  Now that's something I can get used to!
    4. It's probably because nothing else was on TV is the reason why he was okay "watching" the debate with me.  Which is fine - I'm just happy he was open to it.
    5. Loved this quote from the debate, “Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military’s changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines. And so the question is not a game of Battleship where we’re counting ships. It’s — it’s what are our capabilities.”

    Oprah Made Me Do It.

Today I decided to read through my "O Magazine" that I recently got.  When I say, "recently", I really mean, it arrived early last week and I just decided to pick it up and read it.  My favorite part to start with is the "Things I know for Sure".  Why?  Cause I want to know what Oprah really knows for sure.  I mean... I looooooooooooooooove me some Oprah. God knows I do!

In the article, Oprah talks about how she would keep her gratitude journal and did it consistently for 10 years and then over more time, she because less consistent to the point where she rarely did it.  All due to being busy with life.  So busy with life that she wasn't making time to acknowledge the great things that happen in life.  This brings me back to my list of 5 things that I love about today.

It is important to acknowledge the things in life that make it special.  It took my reading of an article to remember the importance it holds in keeping my life in perspective and helping others do so as well.  So, with that said - I. AM. BACK.

    1. Today I did something great. I opened up my second Etsy shop. This shop is specifically for LGBT Pride items and that's something I'm proud of. http://pridefulthings.etsy.com
    2. What a great day for working in the yard. The weather was AMAZING.
    3. I love that I have friends that I share special moments with and I am happy that I can be there for them.
    4. The chili I made for dinner was delicious.  It'll continue to be delicious for the next couple of days, too :0)
    5. I bought a new jacket at Target for only $6.88.  The jacket has George Mason University's school colors on it.  That's a twofer! Heeeeeeey!

Positivity. Have You Had Your Plus Sign Today?

The title is borrowed from a Prince song from the 80s.  The song is on the Lovesexy album if you care you listen.

Lately the need to find positivity in my life has crept back up. This made me think about my blog that I have abandoned all summer.  I never forgot about it but I totally slacked on my posts - this doesn't mean I forgot to think about the things that happened each day.  I thought about it every day. Now, I'm making the conscious effort to get back to it.  It really has made a positive impact on my perspectives.

So, with that said, here we go (again)!

    1. Business has certainly been great in my online shop.  I get at least one sale a week without even trying.  That's awesome.  I even got a sale tonight!
    2. Today was my last class as the seminar instructor for a program we have on campus for incoming freshmen.  It was a great opportunity and I feel as though I have grown from the experience. I also hope that they have grown as well.
    3. I ran today on the treadmill.  I do it three times a week.  Today was the longest I've run in a while and I love that I was able to do it without stopping.  5 minutes running, 2 minutes walking. 4 minutes running, 2 minutes walking.  Repeat.
    4. An old friend of mine that I've known since elementary school said I made her day.  I love it when I can make people smile, laugh, and feel good about themselves and who they are.  I feel like that's one of my callings. Honestly I do.  A student even said that I'm a good listener today.
    5. Speaking of that student, she surprised me with an extra ticket to go to the Obama rally tomorrow.  That was REALLY nice of her.  I'm excited to go. This will be the closest I'll ever get to seeing any president. Thanks, Caitlyn! :0)

    Biking is FUN-damental!

Ooh, what a day!  I got a fair amount done in the office, I chatted it up with a student whom I haven't seen in ages, got my fitness on and have peace and quiet in my house.  Ooh and something else really cool happened - but I am keeping that on the hush for now.

The last few months have been hit or miss with the blog.  In the spirit of the videos, "Shit Bougie Black Girls Say", I'ma need to do better.

    Let's get back to business.

    1. I biked an amazing 20 miles today after work.  I'm channeling James Brown only to say, "I FEEL GOOD!"
    2. I got a phone call that gave me a lot of confidence.  I LOVE when that happens.
    3. My housemate is just about moved out - to the extent that tonight he is no longer sleeping here. This is the first night I've slept with my bedroom door open since last May!.  YAY for solitude!
    4. Apparently my graphic design skills are gettin' REALLY GOOD.  I designed something today as a favor for another office on campus all within 45 minutes.  I like when I can make folks happy with a product.
    5. Speaking of products, a customer of mine just bought a third bracelet from me. She rocks!

    Make it Rain!

A couple weeks ago I was asked if I would be interested in doing a craft fair at a local community college.  This wasn't just any craft fair  - it was an eco-crafts fair.  Initially I thought, "Wait. I don't have enough items that would classify me as an eco-crafter."  With that in mind, I stayed up late Saturday night crafting.  I'm glad I did, because it paid off! The customers made it rain!  Now, instead of money rainin'... I wish it were really raining so my allergies could get a break.

It has CERTAINLY been a long day.  Night, night.
    1. I'm thankful for the friends who were able to stop by my booth at the craft fair.  That was pretty awesome!
    2. I love that I got my first sale soon after I had finished setting up my booth.  The guy bought a key chain.
    3. The guy in the booth next to mine was very helpful.  Since I was there by myself, he offered to help me pull open my pop-up tent.  I was really struggling with it because that is really a two-person job.  He even helped me to collapse it.  I love it when people are genuinely nice.
    4. Another thing I enjoy about these craft fairs is meeting people.  I met some great people today. I love meeting people and building those connections.
    5. New Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream flavor alert!!! "What a Cluster" is peanut butter ice cream with caramel cluster pieces, marshmallow swirls and peanut buttery swirls and it is DELICIOUS! I love it!

    Give Me Funny!

I woke up this morning and logged onto Facebook.  Man, some of these photos with the captions on them are a RIOT!  I love a good laugh out loud moment. We need more of those.

    1. This is one of the images that I loved because it made me laugh.
    2. A friend of mine has written a book and asked me to do the cover work.  How cool is that?  That's an awesome opportunity.
    3. I love the POULTRY SLAM!!
    4. The longest season of bowling EVER has finally ended.  I love that I had the experience of being an officer but I am certainly glad to be done.
    5. I got a listen to the new SWV cd that is coming out and I have to say... I am diggin' it LOTS.

    Signs

I don't know how to explain it without just simply saying, "There are signs telling you what to do every day."  More on that at some other time. :0)  Signs. Signs. Everywhere are signs. Oh, and Oprah has always said you have to listen to the "whispers".  Another sign?
Difficulties come when you don't pay attention to life's whisper. Life always whispers to you first, but if you ignore the whisper, sooner or later you'll get a scream.
Oprah Winfrey, Stanford Commencement Address, 2008
    1. Last night I finally connected with a friend who lives on the west coast.  I talked to her briefly last week but she surprised me with a phone call.  It was good to catch up.  We definitely don't need to go that long without a follow-up again.  Staying up to 1AM isn't good for my mental health at work. LOL
    2. I loved seeing a video for the It Gets Better Campaign that was done by students at Brigham Young University.  Way to go, Mormons!
    3. In other news, I've also reconnected with another friend from the first college I worked at after graduate school. She's moving to the area! I can't wait to see her again.
    4. Biking is becoming the craze! I think I have another person who is going to bike with me this weekend. She seems up to it.  I hope she follows through. Biking is fun!
    5. My Etsy business has been picking up.  I love that. Finally sold some magnets.  They're not the fastest sellers.  Nothing like the paracord bracelets at all - but i find it cool to have sold so many items.  I'm now at 201 sales!

    Way of Thinking #127

Haaaaaaa-Choo!  Yup.... It's that time of year.  Allergy Season has hit me.  It's near misery but it can always be worse. I think that's a good way of thinking about things.  When something seems awful to you - think of a way that it can be worse and be grateful that what you're dealing with isn't that horrible thing or things that you thought of. Dennis' way of thinking #127.

    1. I ventured off to South Riding, VA today.  It was a pretty drive - drove past Cox Farm. I need to check that out again and look at buying some plants.
    2. Visited with the new president of the bowling league and shared info with him that he needs to think about.  It was a nice chat.
    3. Today I was on a roll making bracelets! I came up with a new signature style of survival bracelets.  I'm excited to debut them!
    4. Speaking of bracelets, someone bought the new "Rasta Style" bracelet. How awesome!  That inspired a new idea in itself!
    5.  I am catching up on The Cleveland Show. This show is HILARIOUS!!  I love Seth McFarlane! hahaha

    I've Got the Power

Life is gettin'.. it's gettin'.. it's gettin' kinda hectic... I feel the stress of this job. MAN.. I don't think I've ever felt it like this.  I was fine up until I came back to work today.  This semester can't come to a close fast enough.  I haven't even kept up with this blog as much as I would have liked.

At any rate - if I were an iPhone, I'd be down to 20% power.  I barely have the energy to think or list things that I loved about today - but I will make my attempt with the last bit of battery life I have.  It totally doesn't help that I have a headache from my sinus pain.

    1. I returned to work and people were happy that I was back.  That's always a good feeling - to be missed.
    2. I downloaded the new Madonna album.  At the first listen or two, I wasn't feeling it.  Now I am totally diggin' it.  I love the energy of the record.  The beats are great!  Some of the lyrics are EXTRA simplistic but that has made the songs that much more singable. I haven't liked a Madonna album like this since the Music CD and that was AGES ago.
    3. I am enjoying the game "Draw Something" on my phone - it's a nice challenge of the creative mind.
    4. When I woke up this morning I didn't have to iron a single thing. I LOVE those types of mornings.
    5. Tonight I watched the show, "Touch" while it was actually airing.  This is such a great show.  I've talked about that a few times I know - but I was struggling for a 5th thing to love today and well, this was on and I love it. hahaha

    Whoa is Knee...

What is your truth?  What truth would you like to share?  How truthful are you?  Seemed to be a theme today.  Something to think about.  At any rate - my knee has a deep pain.. It's like WHOA!  I may have to hit up a specialist tomorrow and have the fluids drained... yeah.. lots of info, huh? hahaha
    1. "Truth is Life" - Frank Lloyd Wright.  I really like that quote.  I just heard it on a Ken Burns documentary tonight.
    2. I went to the doctor about my knee injury. Turns out that it's bursitis.  I tell you what.  This is some crazy pain.. Almost as bad as my worst gout flare up.  The Doc was cool as ice though and gave me something for the pain. :0)  I hope I sleep better tonight.  Two days of not a lot of sleep is no good.
    3. My boss treated me to lunch.. Granted, I couldn't eat much.. but at least I didn't have to pay for it!
    4. I had a really good laugh in the staff meeting today. It all stemmed from a bowel movement.  Gross, yes - but FUNNY AS HELL to hear the person bust into the meeting and announce why they were late. LOL
    5. Tonight gave me another laugh - or maybe I'm high on Vicodin... but this video that is clowning on Chic-fil-A is hilarious!

    Our Deepest Fear

Today someone was complaining about where they live and that they pretty much aren't worthy of being loved because they themselves are not able to give it for fear of being hurt. Why is fear so debilitating? I mean, ultimately we're afraid of how someone will respond and I get that.  We probably take more risks at work or when we drive a car or ride a bike than we do with finding love and happiness in our own lives.  I don't know about you but I value my own life and happiness. So, I am willing to take those risks.

    1. Thinking about taking risks, I remembered this quote that I love by Marianne Williamson .
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
    2. I forgot how much I enjoyed Public Television.  I love documentaries about the past.  I killed a good six hours watching the American Experience series on Lyndon B. Johnson and Franklin D. Roosevelt.  Very good programming. I think it's also fitting that FDR has the phrase, "There's nothing to fear but fear itself."  WHOA.. and then the first quote of the morning.  Hmmm.. someone is trying to tell me something.
    3. Gotta love free music.  A friend of mine makes mixes and you can download them on Sound Cloud.
    4. I love that my interactions with people today has caused me to really reflect on what my passion is.  I haven't thought about it since my dog passed away at the end of January. I'm coming to a crossroad where I really need to reconnect with those thoughts.
    5. I love how my friend's mom posts things on my Facebook timeline and I have never met the woman in my life. It cracks me up!  I can't wait to meet Ms. Rosetta!

26 Miles to go. I Want to be Sedated.

Today was an achievement.  My fitness achievement was on FIYAH!  So is my knee.  All that biking made my knee sore. It was a great day to be outside. I haven't biked this far in one day since last summer. Today is also my mom's birthday.  She would have been 67.  Whenever I think about it, it always seems like she only passed away just a couple of years ago.  It's actually been 12 years!  She's always in my head with the sayings she would say or things she would do.  Maybe that's why it never seems that long ago - I keep her memory alive.

At any rate -  let's get to the list, shall we?

    1. Went biking with my housemate today.  We biked a total of 26 miles.  That was awesome.. and now my knee is killing me. hahaha I won't be biking for a few days but I burned 2600 calories!  that's also amazing in itself.
    2. Who knew that the movie, "21 Jump Street" was going to be good as it was?  I know I didn't.  It was really enjoyable and I laughed out loud numerous times.
    3. I received an email from someone I dated and they apologized for something. That was pretty cool of them.
    4. Manassas Walgreen's stores close way too early.  Luckily I made it inside the store 5 minutes before they closed.
    5. While in Walgreen's I picked up an all-natural sleep aid.  I took that pill and it knocked me right out.  I haven't slept that well in a long time - and I had knee pain!

    It's the Little Things

Since I don't try to post daily there's a lot less pressure. Whew! Now I'm posting when I really feel like there's something great to post.  It doesn't mean things that I love haven't happened each day... it just means these are the noteworthy ones.

    1. Man, one of the worst small ailments a person can have is gout. On a scale from 1 - 10... 10 being the worst of all small ailments (and don't ask me what that is but just imagine what would really suck for you), gout is about a 6.  When gout settles into your foot you can't walk.  You can't really do anything but work on treating it.  I've become an pro at treating my ailment when I have a flare up and I love that I had some gout medicine left over to help treat it.  I was back to walking (albeit with a limp) without crutches by the early evening.
    2. I may have only been in the car with her for a short time as I gave her a ride home but I enjoyed hanging out with Wendy. It's been a long time since we did hang out.
    3. Butterfinger makes these chocolate Easter eggs.  Delicious! Oh... and they were 3 for a $1.  Perfecto!
    4. We did nominations for officers for the bowling league.  It's very exciting that we have at least one candidate for each officer position the week before elections.  That's a first in the three years I've been a member of the league.
    5. I am LOVING the show, The Chew.  Since I've been on vacation I've gotten used to watching it.  They showed a pizza casserole on the show that I was like WHAT!!?!?!  That looked delicious!

Tuning In to My Inner Peace

Yeah, I've noticed.  These posts don't happen every day.  I've thought about why and I am concluding that it's because parts of my life are just overwhelming right now. To combat the feeling of being overwhelmed I have started biking.  There's nothing like breezing through the streets and trails and conquering a lot of miles.  I decided that if I'm going to bike I need to bike at LEAST 10 miles.  The next phase of overcoming this feeling is to just get over it and move on. hahaha Yes, it sounds simple and hopefully it is going to be simple.  I gotta come up with a master plan.  At any rate, there are still things I love each day - I just find it hard to make time to get in the frame of mind to post them.

    1. When I woke up today I decided to take on a mission. That mission was to install my outdoor antenna.  I accomplished that task with excellent results!  Getting rid of cable has been an awesome experience and a financial coup since I didn't really watch many of those channels anyhow. With the new antenna I receive 45 channels. Oddly enough, I still only watch 2 - 3 of those channels.
    2. I love that I am good at meeting new people.  I am aware of this talent. Now if I can only translate that into something more. This leads me to a much larger thought that I'll keep to myself. hahaha
    3. I went biking today and I was able to tackle some hills without a problem. I've gotten to those hills in the past and have always found them challenging.  I'm becoming a stronger biker.
    4. Tonight was a Marshall University Phone-a-Friend day.  I heard from two of my college friends within an hour of one another. Very cool to hear from both of them and make potential plans for the future.
    5. Today I noticed that a lot of people were being very friendly. It might be something that happens often or the fact that I was out and about early in the day before people get mean.  Whatever the case may be I loved that people exhibited kindness.

    Jammin' on the One

Hmmm... I wonder how many people will catch that reference in the title??  If you do, post the answer in the comments. :0) Today was just a great day all around... It was JAMMIN.. and it needed to be because this past week was a HOT ASS MESS... a H.A.M. if you will.  But today was nothing but rainbows and daffodils.  hahaha
    1. “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”― Mary Oliver, New and Selected Poem.  I saw this quote and loved it instantly!  Think about it...
    2. I rode 20 miles on my bike today and lived to talk about it!  YAY! Myra was good company. The WOD Trail had a few hills but it was cool riding it - might I mention that it's a paved trail?
    3. On the bike ride we stopped at Amphora... a delicious little place in Vienna, VA.  I ordered the Asian Chicken Salad.  It was the BOMB DIGGITY! I highly recommend.
    4. I had a very memorable first date tonight. We tried out a new restaurant in the area called Absolute BBQ.  Good food.. but let me just say that I haven't felt like the one lone chocolate chip in a LONG while until tonight. LOL  Not a single black person in that place other than myself.  Even my date noticed.  To top it off.. they had live COUNTRY music.   Well, we both survived and I actually knew a lot of the songs they were singing.  I mean, I DID live in West Virginia for nearly a decade!
    5. My Teena Marie station on Pandora is JAMMIN!

    Rollin', Rollin', Rollin'

Today I challenged myself to a biking adventure.  I'm gearing up for cycling season and wanted to bike to work.  Normally it's a 16 miles trip but I drove part of the way and cycled the rest.  7.5 miles covered in one direction and I had to ride back to my car!  Man, what a way to kick off this fitness program. I am exhausted!
    1. What I loved about biking is that I burned nearly 1500 calories!  That's awesome!
    2. Since I burned so many calories I decided to treat myself to a Blooming Onion from Outback Steakhouse.  Oh my, how delicious!
    3. I discovered Mary Tyler Moore on Hulu Plus - I keep finding these old classics.  The thing about this classic is that I've never watched it before. I'm enjoying each episode!  Classic Comedy - much different than most of the shows on TV today.
    4. The weather today was awesome for a bike ride - 72 degrees. I'm glad it was cool (and breezy) because biking on those hills had me sweating. If it were warmer I can only imagine how much sweating I would have done. lol
    5. This was the first time in a long time that I was home fairly early.  I was home before the NBC Nightly News came on. Now THAT'S early!

    Leapin' Lizards!

Sometimes you just have to take the leap.  The leaping can happen in many situations.  Tonight I leaped twice.I also reconnected with my past.  It was nice to catch up.  I even left a couple of phone message with others who may or may not return a phone call. At least I did my due diligence. hahaha

At any rate, let me talk about this leaping business!
    1. I browsed Hulu Plus and came across the show, Quantum Leap.  I used to love this show. Now I get to relive all 5 seasons of it at my leisure.
    2. Sometimes I love when the day flies by.  Lately the weeks have been doing that... I love when it does because that means the weekend has returned.
    3. I enjoy meeting with students and watching them learn something new.
    4. I took a leap today with a job that I saw posted. I figured, "Why not?".  It's in California and that's where I really want to be. It's not every day that you see positions like that.
    5. I love that I solidified plans for the 20 miles bike ride on Saturday with Myra.  Now I just have to get Garey to commit to it. hahaha. That'll be a HUGE leap for him. Hell, a huge leap for me considering I haven't biked in over a year.

    No Sleep 'til Fairfax

I'm writing this and I'm so tired that I barely have my eyes open.  I always feel like I rushed to type this entry but honestly - it all came to me pretty easily. Okay, NOW I just nodded off.  Let me hurry up and do this list.
    1. Okay.. while I don't like ANY of the movies, the latest Twilight soundtrack is pretty damn good! That song by Bruno Mars is really what pulled me into this soundtrack.
    2.  I didn't feel like going and even had a headache but I went to the gym anyway and I am happy that I did. .
    3. Looking through all of the old shows on HULU Plus, I picked out quite a few so that I can go back down memory lane. Quantum Leap, anyone?
    4. During a meeting today we were brainstorming ideas.  Sometimes brainstorming yields okay results. Today we got great results that seem within reach. I love that.
    5. Nothing said, "Delicious" today better than Barbara's Coconut covered, buttercream frosted birthday cake from Wegmans!  OMG - that was the bomb!

Songs That Made the Hit Parade

I've watched a LOT of television today.  It all started this morning with one of my favorite shows as a kid (more on that later). It's been a good day overall.  No complaints at all.
    1. Crackle TV is awesome. Plain and simple.  I started watching All in the Family. The series was so groundbreaking!  It tackled a lot of issues and used words and racial slurs that leave you in disbelief.  The topics they covered are so important even today.  I bet a show like this would never last on the air today.
    2. Cool Ranch Doritos. Nuff said.
    3. I made the quickest, tastiest dinner today - Chicken Alfredo.  It was done within 20 minutes.
    4. The bookstore was having a clearance sale and I couldn't resist buying a new collegiate sweatshirt. I love it and can't wait to wear it.
    5. The new Madonna song is pretty catchy - Girl Gone Wild - it's delightful.

Great Deals and Things of that Nature

Who says you can't get a lot done when you only have 4 hours of sleep?  haha!  I was exhausted when I woke up today but I had plans.  I wanted to get to REI and check out there Attic Sale and I had plans to help a friend look for a bicycle.  He's planning to get fit and I convinced him to do bike with us on the W O D Trail this coming weekend.  I'm excited about that!
    1. I had a great time hanging out with my friend from work. Bike shopping and just regular shopping was cool. Always nice to expand my group of friends.
    2. We stopped by the bike shop and met the owner.  He was pretty chill and seems on the up and up.  I'm definitely going to take my business to him from now on.
    3. Made a stop at Dick's Sporting Goods and scored a pair of Reebok shoes for $5!  Can you believe that?  I love a good deal!
    4. It was a busy night for phone calls.  I guess it was better than NOT getting phone calls. hahaha So that's something worth loving.
    5. One call that I got tonight was from my brother - he's finally sending me that Timbuk2 Messenger Bag! YAY!  I'm excited. These bags are expensive and since I'm getting it for free.. it's a GREAT DEAL!

    Never too late!

It's time for me to post about Sunday and here I am posting about Saturday.  It's never too late to tell you about why Saturday ROCKED!
    1. A friend of mind asked me if I were going out in DC. I originally told myself that I'd stay home and enjoy watching movies.  Well, I changed my mind and said I'd go as long as I didn't have to drive.  I'm glad I went. It was such a fun night.
    2. I sang a few songs at karaoke. One song I rocked the hell out of.  R.E.M.'s "The One I Love".  People kept saying how much they enjoyed it. That was an awesome feeling.
    3. I met someone interesting at the bar and it's RARE that I meet someone at the bar, exchange numbers and we make plans to have dinner.  VERY RARE.
    4. I shopped all over for an over the air antenna and no one seemed to have one. Then I tried HH Greggg and found one - FINALLY!  Network TV - I'm coming back for ya!
    5. I went to 7-Eleven and saw that they have a new flavor of cappuccino.  Cookies and Cream.  It is delicious!

    Failed Haiku

All this rain.  Although I shouldn't complain.  We need the rain. Wow.. that was like a poem.  If I cared enough, I'd check to see if it were on the verge of a haiku. hahaha Okay.. I did take the time and learned that I could have turned it into a proper haiku if I wanted - but I digress.

Made a mini adventure out of a trip to DC tonight. It was definitely an adventure but fun. I think that I will have more fun and make a few things on my list into haiku. hahaha
    1. Tonight I experienced Ben's Chili Bowl for the first time.  I loved the experience but that chili I did not. hahaha
    2. Hanging out with a friend from bowling was fun.  Too bad his GPS was off it's rocker. I'm following him in my car and we're all over Northwest DC.. but hey.. it was fun.  The rain couldn't keep us from getting a half-smoked and some chili!
    3. It rained all night long - so badly I ran to car - love that I did that short run.
    4. My home is empty - a very nice feeling now -Wow, how FANTASTIC!
    5. A productive day -  at work I feel accomplished - back smiling!

    The Beginning of the End

Today I came to a conclusion - This blog will have to end at some point.  I need an end date. Finality. This way I will have achieved a goal.  That new goal is to have 365 posts.  This way I will have accounted for one year of listing the things I love each day.  I'm nearing 200 posts and this all occurred to me.  Some days I list "similar" things I love. Some days have more unique entries. So there you have it - a pending conclusion.
    1. The weather was awesome today.  Made me think of biking this weekend. My friend told me that she was up for a bike ride next weekend. Then another friend mentioned that he thought about buying a bike and I told him that I would go look for one with him on Sunday so that he could bike with us next weekend. I love that others are wanting to bike with me this year!
    2. Second workout of the week happened TODAY!! WOO HOO!
    3. I enjoyed the "office party" in Rosanna's office.  Good times!
    4. I talked to my friend from bowling about going out tomorrow night and we're hittin' the town! I think this will be a fun night out.
    5. I made a new style of bracelet tonight after swooping into AC Moore and picking up some new cord. I'm diggin' the new style.  Hopefully others will, too.
Ooh.. and I have another one to add - I love the Mormon episode of Southpark. It is hilarious.  It came to mind when I saw a friend on Facebook like the musical, "The Book of Mormon". hahaha

    Back in Stride Again?

Okay. The title isn't so affirming but it's the best I could do today.  I mean, I did do a few things that would indicated that my mood is lightening.  That's a good thing.  I will also say that not having cable has been quite the experience but has left me with a more varied viewing experience of less mindless television.  A documentary here. A National Geographic special there. Hopefully the lack of cable will translate into more creativity.

Let's see what lovely things made the list today.
    1. Oh roasted veggies, I've missed you so much.  I got the vegetables for this delicious meal from an event on campus.  Students never want to eat too many of the raw veggies - so I lucked out!
    2. Oh workout routine, I've missed you too. I did elliptical training today for 30 minutes.  I used to run but lately I just don't feel like running.  I figured elliptical training could be my gateway workout. LOL
    3. I asked for the entire week of Spring Break off and now I have it. What shall I do? I never take time off like this. I definitely need it though.
    4. Today people seemed extra friendly. Wouldn't it be amazing if everyone was like that?
    5. I got the buckles I ordered to make new bracelets.  New colors!  Now, I don't know why that makes me happy, but it does. hahaha

Hey, You're Just Too Funky for Me

The "Blue Funk" has returned.  I don't know why but it has definitely crept back up on me. I think I need a getaway.   For Spring Break, I think I'm going to take the whole week off. Maybe drive somewhere and bike ride and just clear my head and get back in "the game".
    1. I did a presentation for the office today based on the "Love Your People" booklets and discussion questions I ordered. It went well and people were getting into the philosophy of the book.  Pretty good for a guy in a funky mood!
    2. Since it was a cloud over my day, I came home and finally made these pizza rolls that I found on Pinterest.  Very tasty but I think I'll try it with dinner rolls next time.  The bread on the crescent rolls was too sweet.
    3. Jimmy Kimmel is the man!  I needed a good ass laugh tonight and him and Oprah gave it to me!  Watch this clip of "Jimmy Kimmel Pitches OWN Shows to Oprah".  TOO FUNNY!
    4. Just ordered Amazon Prime and with it you get unlimited video streaming on ROKU - BOOYAH!  So my inaugural movie is Sparkle.   Another movie waiting to be watched is All About Eve. TOO EXCITED!
    5. Going to bed early is something that I love. I need the extra couple of hours and I hope that turns the blue a few shades lighter.  Good night!

    And the Oscar Goes To...

I have had a headache for two days.  I hope it goes away tomorrow.  I've been so very lazy today. Spent the majority of the day in bed. I'm sure that has only contributed to my headache.  UGH... but you know.. I am not going to whine.  I am going to think about the awesome things that happened today!
    1. I thought I was going to lose my mind when I realized that I didn't have cable anymore and couldn't pick up any channels.  I mean... OMG.. The Oscars are on!!  Well, after searching for about 20 minutes, I finally found a site that let me watch it for free online.  :0)
    2. I loved this explanation of Geeks and Hipsters. hahaha I'm about 80% hipster.
    3. I watched two movies today.  Contagion and Beginners.  Both were good movies and I got to see the Academy Award performance by Captain von Trapp... I mean Christopher Plummer. :0)
    4. Etsy - I finally showed you some attention today my friend!  I'm glad I was able to take the photos and upload the items today.  Whew!
    5. Way to go Octavia Spencer!  I love that you won and that you seem so down to earth!

    Mmm Pizza...

I haven't had a Saturday where I did nothing in a very long time.  What's funny is that while I did nothing I still did something!  I cleaned and did laundry - which was nice because I didn't feel rushed to be anywhere or so anything.  I also made a very adult decision.  I'll talk about that in a minute.  In all, Saturday was a great day.
    1. Laundry: Check! Vacuuming: Check! Scrubbing shower: Check! Cleaning bedroom: Check!  Damn, I was productive.  I love being in the zone with cleaning.
    2. I made the call into Verizon Fios. I turned cable off.  I was a bit nervous but when that lady told me that I would be saving $70 a month, I lost all nervousness! HAHA I love saving money way more than I like having cable.
    3. Someone gave me a new coffee mug - this one from Peru.  Very thoughtful.
    4. I normally don't try different types of pizzas.  Tonight, due to compromise, I tried the chicken alfredo pizza.  Very tasty!  I might have to try that one again.
    5. Speaking of pizza - I ordered cheese bread or sticks or whatever you want to call them.  Papa Johns and that deliciously devilish garlic butter!!! All I can say is Mmmm Mmmm good.

    Lifes Rich Pageant

Today started off rocky.  I haven't been getting enough sleep at all. I think it's time to flip the mattress. I knew making it through my meetings today as well as getting through the event tonight would be tough but I made it.I'm back on the routine, too!  WOO HOO!
    1. I had never been to the Mr. and Ms. Black GMU Pageant but I'm glad I went this year and served as a judge.  It was a nice event.
    2. Lots of these students are very talented. There was a vocal performance group that sang a song called "Black and Blue".  They were so amazing that I had to speak to them after the program and let them know.  I am determined to find them an opportunity to perform again!
    3. It's always a nice time having lunch with Jen.  Now we're planning her a night out on the town where she can "show her feathers" - btw, when she said that, I thought she literally meant feathers and asked her if she was going to wear a boa. LOL
    4. Today I was able to flex my talents in graphic design and web design.  I feel so accomplished! YAY!!
    5. My brother let me know that someone wants to order ten bracelets from me.  How awesome is that?  Mo' Money... Mo' Money... Mo' Money...

    A Wiggle in My Toes

I have been UBER busy.... well more like preoccupied. Maybe even distracted.  Definitely off my routine. At any rate, it's been a good couple of days. I've shaken the blah mood and I'm pretty much back to normal - aside from getting back into my regular routine. haha  The weather has been amazing so hopefully this weekend I can go out and enjoy it.
    1. I just read this on a blog this morning: "As Anais Nin said, "We see things not as they are, but as we are."   Perception!" Such a good thing to remember about ourselves. I need to really put this into context of the last few weeks. Whew.
    2. "Our prime purpose in life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them." I saw this pop up on my Facebook news feed. Very true.
    3. I went on a nice "meet and greet" as I call it. hahaha
    4. I'm excited about the socks I bought.  Strange I know, but these are cool socks!  They go over each individual toe. LOL
    5. I love that I have had another productive day.

    Tuesday, February 21, 2012

    Rainbows

Today I was called out on my "blahness mood".  I've been in a funk before but as my boss put it, it's never last more than a week.  I am now in week two.  Hopefully it'll pass sooner. Maybe I'm just dehydrated. HAHA wouldn't it be nice if it were just that?  At any rate - let's get on with this list so I can go to bed.. I am worn out!
    1. If you watched Glee, then you know it was an amazing episode!  I loved the opening song and scene but it was unfortunate what happened. Lots of "rainbows" in this episode.
    2. I found a new little web show that's pretty interesting. It's on Crackle and it's called Gay Town. It's about a straight guy who is stuck in a town full of gays. Anything he does as a straight man is illegal and he's ostracized for not being gay.
    3. I got to work really early (for me) and was administratively productive today. Like McDonald's tagline, "I'm lovin' it"!
    4. I have been hearing a song a lot lately and had no idea who it was. While watching Glee tonight, I Googled the words, "I'm glad you came".  It's actually by The Wanted and well, Glee did a way better version of the song. hahaha
    5. Oh wow... I'm to the last one and I have dozed off three or four times already!  I need a 5th item, STAT!  OOoh  I love that my boss brought in a bag of Swedish Fish... Now that was uber nice of her!

    R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Day Two: Family Visit.  I've come to recognize that if I had kids, they'd be trained like my dog Big Mac. LOL I've been amazed (figure of speech cause I'm really not amazed) by how they are.  I guess I have an expectation that seems to live in the memory of how my parents raised me.  There are certain expectations of children of a certain age. Those expectations exists because you're preparing them for life outside of the nest. I remember learning how to properly wash dishes - dishes are good and clean when they're no greasy feeling left on the item and no food residue. I might add that I was the one who did the dishes because I got to eat for free. So many lessons were taught to me as a kid because I was given responsibility.  Oh, and the back talk I'm hearing?  I have four words for that - HELL - TO - THE - NAW! Do I hear Aretha singing???? R-E-S-P-E-C-T...

Any how... It will certainly be interesting to see it all works out. [steps off soap box] On to the list.
    1. HULU has me watching The Cleveland Show - the episode, The Hurricane, is pretty good.  It touched on the topic of religion - I love how Jr. took on the views that he did on religion. My sentiments are the same. hahaha
    2. My brother made a nice cheesy lasagna.  It was tasty AND I didn't have to cook.  So that was pretty amazing in itself!
    3. My roommate gave me a belated birthday gift. That was pretty nice of him. It was a gathering of items - one of which is a mandarin/lemon scented candle that smells awesome!
    4. I've seen this video before but I saw it again tonight and remembered how much I loved it - Is Being Gay a Choice?
    5. I enjoyed my visit to Madame Tussaud's and to the Native American History Museum today. It was very informative. I don't think my nephews enjoyed it but whatever....

    Rockin' in the Free World

I've never pledged my allegiance to any one sports team in a long while. I'm not really a sports fan but there have been teams that I have always rooted for - the Detroit Pistons and the Marshall University football team. Today, I felt connected to the George Mason University Mens Basketball team.  It was great to watch the Patriots take the win today, the last home game of the season.
    1. On the way to the game I got to sign the banners for all of the graduating seniors on the Mason basketball team.
    2. I got a delicious steak sub from Vocelli's Pizza and it was DELICIOUS!
    3.  I am still amazed by this Roku Box.  Best. Piece. Of. Technology. EVER!
    4. My niece kicked my butt in Guitar Hero.  So much for thinking I was pretty good. hahaha I love how she was so into keeping track of the scores and beating her uncle, which I didn't mind.
    5. Sleeping pills. Check.  I love that I had some on hand so that I could sleep like a rock!

    Family Fun Time

Today marks the first time my brother and his kids have visited since I've been in my (semi) newly acquired home.  It's pretty cool having them here.  I haven't seen them in about 4 years and let me just say - What a difference that time frame makes!  They all have gotten so tall and the oldest has facial hair!  The others have hit puberty and I'm just floored.  I guess that means they've gotten older and so have I.  The oldest nephew was born in 1993.  That doesn't seem so long ago to me - but geez - he's a grown ass man now. Might not be mature but he can now vote.

    1. I had a series of nice meetings today.  I have to say that I think I'm going to enjoy partnering with a new person on an initiative.
    2. I loved seeing that the Program Board event tonight was PACKED. Great job!
    3. I loved that I was able to play video games with my nephew and niece. Clearly, they play these games way more than me LOL I think tomorrow night I will challenge them in Guitar Hero!
    4. Today marked my debut at a voice over artist. hahaha I had to do a series of videos on how to use a program.  The videos are for students and I hope they prove to be helpful. really enjoyed making them.
    5. While out to dinner with family, we sat next to a table with a very talkative, yet good-natured Korean guy that made sure we knew he could be "down" with the black folks. hahaha He was kind of annoying (and drunk) however, I loved how he got serious for a moment and got on my nephews case about not going to college. This was a classic moment!  A total stranger saying to my nephew, "Man, you should go to college, even if it's community college because a degree will open doors."  That was very nice of him to say and while he was annoying for most of the meal, him saying this made a world of difference to me.

    Slow News Day

My eyes are TIRED.. it's been a helluva week.  There's definitely been a theme going on here.  My body is telling me to slooooooooooooow down.  I can't slow down this weekend because I have family in town, but next week you better believe I will.  I just need a weekend where I don't do or go anywhere.  WHEW.. I'm in need of recharging my battery.

It was definitely a slow "news" day around here too.. but I still found 5 items!
    1. When I got home I was excited to see that I received my Roku Box!  WOO HOO!  So.. now it's time to hook it up. Unfortunately, I was too tired tonight to focus on doing that.
    2. I made some great guacamole tonight. Those avocados were ripened to perfection!
    3. Great conversation was had tonight with someone in my office.  It's was one of those types of conversations where you sense that we both really understood each other a little better.
    4. It rained most of the day but that didn't keep people from being friendly.  People seemed extra friendly today. I don't mind that at all. I think people should practice kindness regularly.
    5. When I left campus tonight the traffic wasn't bad at all. I think i got home within 25 minutes.. That's pretty much a record on a Thurdday night.  Metro DC traffic ain't no joke!

    It's a Beautiful Life

Simply stated, no matter what you're going through based on your perspective, it's a wonderful life. When I thought about this, I also thought about the Ace of Base song called, "It's a Beautiful Life". Then I wanted to hear the song... hahaha

    Enjoy!
    1. What a great song by Estelle. It's a Wonderful Life.  I love when people push out positivity.  There is just way too much negativity out there... It's like people like to wallow is sorrow.  When you really think about things in the grand scheme, it most certainly a wonderful life because things can always be worse.
    2. I desperately needed an oil change.  When I left work it was nearing 7PM.  The place closes at 7PM.  I made it in the nick of time.  WHEW!  They even informed me of things I needed to get done - a new battery, new fuel filter. I'm glad I got my tax return! LOL
    3. You know, they say that when things feel uncomfortable that those are the times we experience growth.  Today I felt uncomfortable.  While I don't like that feeling, I love growing and becoming better at what I do.
    4. Today I rocked the preppy look according to Melissa.  I like that! LOL
    5. My brother, who will be visiting this weekend, sent me a text to ask about the weather. He then asked if I had a coat he could wear here.  Mind you...my brother and I haven't worn the same size since I was in 7th grade.  Make another note that he is 8 years older than me.  The final note is that I have been, since 8th grade, been larger than him.  Now, fast forward to today - we wear the same size! hahaha His weight has gone up and mine has gone down and we meet in the middle. How funny!

    Valentine, What? Valentine, Who?

    It's Valentine's Day... AND??

ANYWAY - here's my list for today.
    1. Glee was FANTASTIC tonight.
    2. Good pep talk from the boss today.. I needed that.
    3. I ate the chili that I made on Sunday tonight.. It was totally tastier than that night.
    4. I bought myself the Roku today.. I am sooooo excited to get it and be released from the hold cable has had on me.
    5. I was in University Hall today on campus and there are hallways in that building that were reminiscent of a scene in The Misadventures of AWKWARD Black Girl  LOLOLOLOLOLOL  I love that that's the first thing that popped into my head each time I passed people!

Facebook Will You Be My Valentine?

Today was all about technology. I talked about technology at work and then came home to learn about technology.  How about that?   I LOVE technology! I love Facebook. lol Tomorrow is Valentine's Day and I haven't had a Valentine since 2005. Crazy, huh? Oh well, Facebook, will you be mine?
    1. Out of necessity I have been trying to find ways to NOT have cable.  Paying all this money for it is ridiculous.  I'm downsizing.  I mentioned downsizing on Facebook and learned about Playon.tv AMAZING!! I am sitting here watching 60 Minutes through the internet on my TV.  FOR FREE!  There are limited commercials, too! You can't beat that with a stick.  Cable be gone!
    2. As I talked about the need to remove my cable bill a good friend of mine said she has a digital converter.  She offered to send it to me for free! YAY!
    3. Jeffrey Osborne. What a great singer. I was listening to his songs on Spotify.  I mean, I had my Whitney fill for the next few days. I was in 3rd grade when this great song came out: Stay with Me Tonight
    4.  I am still learning that to live in the present, while challenging, is really the only way to live. I love that that lesson was brought back to my attention today via the Facebook feed. How about that?
    5. It was a good text messaging day. That is all.

    Laaaazy Daaaaays

Summer Breeze, makes me feel fine.  Blowing through the jasmines of my miiiiiiiiiiind.  Okay, I don't know how many people would get that reference.  They are lyrics from a couple of songs from a commercial that.  I have this memory of my childhood that could be a novel - I swear!   Check out the commercial in my list - I kept doing a search until I found the actual commercial on Youtube.  Obviously other people have memories linked to it like me.
    1. So many memories from my childhood come from TV.  When I wasn't outside building forts, having dirt bomb wars, playing with fireworks, riding my bike or hanging with friends, I was on the couch watching TV. This commercial sticks out in my mind all the time - LAZY DAYS.... Summer breeze...
    2. Boo-yah!  I sold a bracelet to someone in London. I guess the economy is picking up. :0)
    3. I made chicken chili tonight.. it's tasty but that recipe needed a little tweaking.
    4. I love that Adele kicked ass at the Grammys.  She's had an amazing year! I remember hearing Rolling in the Deep at a bar in DC and I was like.. WHOA!  This song is awesome!  Here we are a year and a half since I've heard it and it's won a ton of awards.
    5. Still sad to know that Whitney Houston has passed away. I loved her music. I remember when she started.  VEVO Music has put together a nice collection of her music videos.  Check them out and reminisce. Video Collection

    News from the Metropolis

Picture it - a sunny day. New tires on my car, a full gas tank and a mind full of determination as I drove into DC. The goal for the day was to visit the Newseum and to go out in the city.  I achieved both.  Prior to going out, I got a message saying Whitney Houston had died.  WHAAAAAAAAAT?  I thought it was a rumor.  You know, in the sense that reporters sometimes misreport things.  So I asked my friend to look it up on his computer and see what the news feeds said. Every couple of minutes that passed solidified the fact that what was hoped to be a rumor was actual truth.  An American Pop Icon has passed away.  On the radio, DJs played her songs to honor her.  Such great music.

Ahh... at any rate, there are still things I loved about today..
    1. I have new tires and all I can say is WOW.. the car drives so much nicer! It was expensive but well worth it even if it is only for the safety reasons!
    2. The Newseum was a great time.  There is so much information though.  Because it's about news, there's lots of reading. I highly recommend a visit - just be sure to have at LEAST 3 hours set aside for it.
    3. As many times as I have been to DC - it's about time that I know how to navigate my way around a huge chunk of the city.  I love that I was able to maneuver the mean streets with ease today because my GPS was NOT cooperating.
    4. I met some new folks tonight.  One person in the group actually lived in Huntington, West Virginia at the same time I did. He even claimed to remember me.  Well, I can't say the same.. but hey, it was still a fun night out.
    5. There was somethin' cool about hanging out in the mall at Starbucks and having a coffee and just catching up on life with one of my friends. It was very metropolitan.

    Frontal Lobe Friday

I was thinking about my future - my future in my career path.  Right now I don't have any aspirations to be anything other than happy.  I used to think that it was ridiculous to stay in a role for "X" amount of years.  Now I'm starting to think about it differently.  I just want to be happy and love what I do. Simple enough, right? hahaha I think that's the bohemian artist in me speaking right now.  Ahh oh well... let's get on with the list before I get too cerebral!
    1. I love these pictures... The Carters are keeping it classy! http://helloblueivycarter.tumblr.com/
    2. A friend of mine needed a favor and I am glad that I was in a place where I could help him out.  I know how much that meant for him.
    3. Today, since I was home from work, I made a couple of new bracelets that I had thought about creating. I can't wait to post them on the site to see what type of response I get.
    4. Facebook Parenting: For the troubled teen. I saw this video today and was kind of in shock by what the dad did.  Then I thought about it and I believe that it's important that parents put their foot down with their kids.  It's too often that children aren't held accountable for their actions or parents are afraid to be harsh, etc.  I love how this dad kept it old school and took that laptop and blasted bullets into it.  Yeah, it was dramatic but he's the dad!  I'm sure his daughter won't forget who's the boss. That's for damn sure!
    5. I love that I have made it almost to pay day and I still have money on my Suze Orman "The Approved" Card. hahaha AWESOME!!

    Sick and Tired . . .

Cough! Cough!  Ewww.. sickness.  Yep, the bug is going around and it made a visit to my body.  I have been under the weather for a couple of days.  Hopefully it'll pass by Saturday. I have things to do! hahaha  The worst part is that it zaps all of the energy out of me. If I weren't typing this, I'd be asleep!  But before I sleep, you know what time it is... it's list time!
    1. I love Nyquil.  That is all.
    2. Sick Days - Use them. I used mine today and I will use it tomorrow. I'm love that I have them. Hell, I love that I have a job that offers me a lot of time off. I learned that my brother only gets 6 sick days a year.  WOW!
    3. The wrap up meeting today was pretty productive. Lots of great ideas to be excited about.
    4. Vietnamese soup - AKA Pho Hoa.  I bought some today for lunch and didn't finish it so I also had it for dinner.  I hope it helps this sickness.
    5. Lately I've been playing those scratch off lottery tickets.  I'm hoping to become a big winner.  Part of me even believes that it'll happen. Today I bought two $1 tickets - scratched them off.  I won $5.  Woo hoo!

    That's So Ratchet!

What a Wednesday!  Full of laughs, intrigue, deception, athleticism, and gossip! LOL  Just another night at the bowling alley. But hey, it was pretty fun!  With all of the fun I had today, I nearly forgot that I'm not feeling well. I do believe some Nyquil is in my near future. However, I am recommitted to my daily blogging - it keeps the spirits up. The power of positive thinking!
    1. I wore an awesome outfit today apparently because I got several compliments.  Well, actually I knew the outfit looked sharp! hahaha  A nice pair of chocolate brown pants - by the way, why do we feel the need to say chocolate brown instead of just chocolate or just brown? I paired that with a chartreuse sweater and wore my fancy wingtip shoes. I did a presentation to a class this morning and a student slyly said under his breath, "Snazzy shoes." as I was leaving the room.  That made me grin.
    2. While in my office today, Corrine and I took care of a project that had been lingering over our heads for a while. Once we finished we started joking about making our own, "Shit Students Say to Student Affairs Professionals".  We were DYING laughing.  I think I may actually make a script up and film it!
    3. WOO HOO!  Day three of not having to buy lunch.  BOO-YAH!
    4. Line of the day, "I'm gonna need you to do better." And why did I just learn what "Ratchet" means in slang terms?  CRAZY!  I thought it meant good - as in you "ratchet something up" as if you're cranking it up.  I love how we learn new things every day.
    5. I had a blast at the bowling alley.  It was so much fun!  Shout out to Travis, Steven, David, and Herb! Y'all are SO NOT ratchet!
